Summer is brutal for spray painters—double the misery. You're sweating it out in the booth, and your spray gun is "bleeding" under the heat.

At the end of the day, you drop the gun in a bucket of cleaner, grab a shower, and call it a night. Feels normal, right? That gun might not survive the summer.

I've seen way too many guns that weren't "worn out" by use—they were "neglected to death." A $300 gun, after one careless summer, loses its precision, leaks air, sprays unevenly—and ends up as scrap metal.

This article is about how to make sure your spray gun actually survives the summer.

1. What the Heat Is Really Doing to Your Gun

Don't think of your gun as a chunk of metal—it's more sensitive than you realize.

Damage 1: Heat Accelerates Paint Curing—Your Gun Is Getting "Cemented" Shut

For every 10°C rise in temperature, the curing reaction speed of paint doubles. You finish spraying, call it a day—and the residual paint inside the gun hardens faster than you'd expect. Residue that could have been washed out now sticks to the internal passages like cement.

Skip a thorough cleaning for one week, and your flow passages shrink by 20%. That feeling of "the atomization isn't as good as before"? Not your imagination—your gun is actually clogged.

Damage 2: Seals Age Faster in the Heat

The O-rings in your gun are mostly made of rubber or PTFE. High temperatures accelerate rubber aging—hardening, cracking, losing elasticity.

The result: air leaks, paint leaks, unstable pressure. Your carefully dialed-in settings drift mid-job because the seals just can't hold anymore.

Damage 3: Solvent Soaking + Heat = Surface Corrosion

It's common practice to drop the whole gun into a solvent bath at the end of the day—and this is especially deadly in summer.

In high heat, solvent evaporates faster, becomes more concentrated, and turns more corrosive. The plating on your gun's surface and the precision-ground internal passages are slowly being eaten away. A brand-new gun, soaked all summer, will look three years older by September.

2. Summer Gun Care: Three "Dos" and Three "Don'ts"

Three Dos

Do #1: Clean immediately after every spray session (within 5 minutes)

As soon as you spray that last coat, empty the cup, pour out leftover paint, and flush the internal passages with thinner. Don't wait. Don't put it off. Don't "just have a smoke first."

In summer, paint skins over fast. Every 10 minutes you delay doubles the cleaning difficulty. Leaving it until the next day? That's basically giving up.

Standard procedure:

  1. Dump out excess paint.

  2. Pour in a small amount of thinner, pull the trigger, and flush for 3–5 seconds.

  3. Disassemble the nozzle and needle, and scrub with a soft brush.

  4. Blow-dry all parts with compressed air.

  5. Reassemble and store in a dry place.

The whole process takes no more than 5 minutes. Skipping those 5 minutes costs you a gun.

Do #2: Do a "deep clean" at the end of every day

If you've sprayed for more than 3 hours, or used high-solids or 2K paints, a quick flush isn't enough—you need a full tear-down cleaning.

Deep clean steps:

  1. Remove all paint-contact parts (nozzle, needle, air cap, fluid passages).

  2. Soak disassembled parts in thinner for 10–15 minutes (parts only—never the whole gun).

  3. Clean air cap holes and nozzle holes with the correct cleaning needle—air cap holes require the thicker gauge (0.5mm, 0.8mm, 1.0mm are common sizes), nozzle holes need a finer needle. Never use wire or random metal tools.

  4. Blow out every part with compressed air (don't forget the side holes on the air cap).

  5. Inspect all O-rings—replace immediately if deformed or cracked.

Do #3: Lubricate before every use

Put 3–4 drops of specialized pneumatic tool oil into the air inlet after cleaning and before reassembly (never use motor oil or sewing machine oil as substitutes). This is a habit many old-timers swear by—it lubricates seals, prevents rust, and keeps air pressure stable.

Specific method: after you've cleaned and before you put the gun back together, drop 3–4 drops of oil into the air inlet, then pull the trigger a few times to distribute it evenly.

Three Don'ts

Don't #1: Soak the gun in thinner overnight

This is the single most common "gun murder" case. People think "soaking makes it cleaner"—it does the exact opposite.

The damage from prolonged soaking:

  • Seals swell, deform, and lose their seal

  • The gun's plating gets eaten away by thinner (especially cheap thinner)

  • Precision fits loosen, atomization accuracy drops

Correct practice: Clean it the same day you use it. Soak disassembled parts only (never more than 15 minutes). Never soak the whole gun.

Don't #2: Use metal tools to poke out clogged holes

Air cap or nozzle holes clogged? Grabbing a piece of wire, a drill bit, or a nail to poke them clear—is a guaranteed way to ruin the gun.

The inside of the nozzle is precision-ground and not very hard. Metal tools will scratch the interior surface. Once scratched, atomization becomes uneven—and it's permanent damage. It cannot be fixed.

Correct practice: Use the plastic or brass cleaning needle that came with the gun (softer than the nozzle material) and clean gently. No factory needle? A bamboo skewer works too.

Don't #3: Store the gun in direct heat/sunlight

Tossing your gun on a windowsill, in the car, or near the booth door after work—sun exposure can push gun temperature to 50–60°C.

The consequences:

  • Seals age faster

  • Lubricant evaporates

  • Metal expands and contracts, affecting precision fits

Correct practice: After cleaning, store it in a cool, dry place—preferably in a gun case or bag.

3. Weekly "Checkup" List for Summer

Besides daily care, a quick once-over every week can catch problems before they become expensive:

Seal inspection: Remove the needle and nozzle and check all O-rings for deformation, cracking, or hardening.

Air cap check: Hold the air cap up to a light source to confirm no holes are blocked (you should see even light through all holes).

Needle inspection: Check the needle tip for wear or bending (wear causes paint to leak when the trigger is closed).
Air inlet check: Make sure the inlet screen isn't clogged (clogs cause unstable pressure).

Body inspection: Look for cracks or peeling plating (exposed base metal corrodes faster from solvent exposure).

4. A Few Honest Words About "Good" Guns

A good spray gun really shows its worth in summer.

Some high-end German and Japanese brands put serious engineering into seal materials—superior heat resistance, solvent resistance, and durability compared to ordinary seals. Their internal fluid passages are also better designed—less paint buildup, easier cleaning.

But even the best gun, if neglected, won't last one summer. A spray gun is 70% about how you use it and 30% about how you care for it.

Summer heat puts double the strain on your equipment. While you're sweating it out in the booth, your gun is quietly taking a beating too—faster curing paint, harsher solvent exposure, aging seals.

Spend 5 extra minutes cleaning your gun at the end of each day, and 10 minutes on a weekly checkup. That gun will easily stay with you for three more years.
