A flawless paint job is decided before the gun ever comes out. Old paint, flaking clear coat, and cracked varnish have to come off first, and a heat gun does it without gouging the surface the way a scraper alone does and without the mess and fumes of chemical stripper. Set the dial, soften the old finish, lift it away in sheets. Then prime and spray onto clean substrate.
