Many DIY enthusiasts and professional painters have a bad habit: After spraying, just toss the gun aside and deal with it tomorrow. The next day, the paint has dried, the nozzle is clogged, the air holes are blocked, and a perfectly good spray gun is ruined.

But here’s the truth: Cleaning a spray gun doesn’t have to be a big deal. If you know the right method, 5 minutes is all it takes to get it sparkling clean.

Below is the "5-Minute Quick Cleaning Method" – read on and save your gun.

What You'll Need (3 Things)

  • Appropriate thinner (for oil-based paint: lacquer thinner / paint thinner; for water-based paint: water / alcohol)

  • Small brush (toothbrush or small brass wire brush)

  • Cleaning cup or waste cup (to catch used thinner)

The Core 5-Step Method (Start the Clock)

Minute 1: Pour Out Leftover Paint

Remove the paint cup and pour any unused paint back into its original can (close the lid tightly). This step saves you the most money.

Minute 2: Clean the Cup and Pickup Tube

Pour 1/3 cup of thinner into the cup, swirl it around for a few seconds, then pour it out. Use your brush to scrub the cup walls and the pickup tube opening. Remember: The pickup tube is the first thing to get clogged.

Minute 3: Flush the Gun Body

Reattach the cup and fill it with half a cup of clean thinner. Spray into a waste rag or bucket – pull the trigger for 3-5 seconds, release, then spray again. Stop only when the spray comes out as clear liquid.

Key move: Cover the nozzle tip with your finger and pull the trigger. This forces thinner back into the cup, cleaning the internal passages. Many pros use this "back-flush" trick.

Minute 4: Clean the Nozzle and Needle

Remove the nozzle, needle, and air cap (remember the order – take a photo if needed). Soak them in thinner and scrub, paying special attention to the tiny pinhole in the nozzle. Use a toothpick to clear it – never use a wire.

Minute 5: Dry and Reassemble

Wipe all parts dry with a lint-free cloth. Pay special attention: The needle and the inside of the nozzle must have no lint residue. Reassemble in the original order, then pull the trigger twice to check that everything moves smoothly.

Two Time-Saving Tools (Highly Recommended for Beginners)

  1. Use a syringe: Fill it with thinner and flush the nozzle hole directly – clears it in 5 seconds.

  2. Ultrasonic cleaner: About $20-30. Drop the nozzle in for 2 minutes – it comes out like new.

Three Mistakes You Must Avoid

  • ❌ Soaking overnight – This will damage the seals, causing leaks the next day.

  • ❌ Using a wire to poke the air holes – The holes are precision-machined; one poke ruins them.

  • ❌ Using oil-based thinner on water-based paint – This creates a gel-like goo that completely clogs the gun.

Quick Check: Is It Clean Enough?

  • ✅ When spraying thinner, the atomization is even and particle-free

  • ✅ The air cap and nozzle have no leftover color stains

  • ✅ The needle is smooth and scratch-free

If all of the above are true, congratulations – your gun will last at least another 5 years.
